Do sole traders need a business bank account?
Updated: 14/07/2026 · 5 min read
The short answer: sole traders have NO legal obligation to hold a business bank account (unlike limited companies). You do have an overwhelming practical interest in keeping business money in a SEPARATE account — even a second personal one — and one legal-ish caveat: many banks’ terms prohibit business use of personal accounts.
Why separation is non-negotiable
- Your tax return comes off one statement instead of fishing business lines out of the groceries
- HMRC enquiries are far cleaner with a dedicated account
- You see the business’s real cash flow (and the 25–30% tax pot is easier to maintain)
- Accountants charge for time — clean statements are cheaper statements
Second personal account vs business account
Check the small print: many banks prohibit business banking on personal accounts and can close accounts showing clear trading activity. App-based banks (Starling, Monzo, Tide and similar) open free or cheap sole-trader business accounts in minutes, with categorisation and CSV export.
- Low volume, a few transfers a month: a second personal account often suffices
- Regular business inflows and a card for purchases: a business account (£0–10/month)
- Card payments from customers / a terminal: business account, effectively required
The account is half the story
A statement proves THAT you paid; the receipt proves WHAT and with how much VAT. HMRC wants both. The winning combo: a separate account plus a system where every purchase has its receipt photographed and its data extracted — then filing is an export, not an investigation.
Every receipt captured, categorised and audit-ready.

Is a business account legally required for sole traders?+
No — the legal requirement applies to limited companies. For sole traders it is best practice, and often required by the bank’s own terms.
Can I just use my personal account?+
Technically, but check your bank’s terms — many prohibit business use. A second account (personal or business) avoids both the compliance and the mess.
Which business account should I pick?+
App-based banks open sole-trader accounts online in minutes, often free, with transaction export. Compare monthly fees, cash handling and integrations.
Is a bank statement enough evidence for expenses?+
Not by itself — it shows the payment, not the items or VAT. Keep receipts and invoices; statements are supporting evidence.
